Mmm tasty fish!

Buddy, our resident bald eagle is enjoying some lunchtime fish. During our education tours, we often get asked what Buddy likes to eat. The answer is fish! He is also very fond of quail.

We also don't cut his food up for him, he gets it whole, just like he would catch it in the wild. That's not because we are in a rush, it's because it's necessary for his enrichment.

Part of his mental stimulation and physical exercise is flexing the strength of his feet and his neck. Eagles use their strong talons to tear open their food and to hold on to it while they tear strips of meat off with their sharp beak. But that beak isn't as strong as you may think - it's not good for crushing or piercing. The work is really done with their powerful neck muscles yanking the food off the bone. He needs to work those muscles!

So mealtime for Buddy is also part of his exercise and entertainment routine.
